So I de- and reinstalled notepad++. Now I cannot install plugins with plugin manager not manually. When I try with plugin manager, it signs off with the message that it will shutdown to do the install, but when np++ comes up again, nothing is done, there is not even a new entry in the plugin folder.
The Plugin Manager delivered with that version of Notepad++ is 1.0.8. Now I want to add the "Compare" plugin Attempting to update the plugin manager, as detailed by other answers, did not resolve the issue for me and the "Installation of Compare failed" persisted.
